How to Read a Foundation Crack in Your Chattanooga Home
Most homeowners who discover a foundation crack face the same question: how worried should I be? You can get a reasonable first read on severity by understanding what different crack characteristics communicate.
Direction: Horizontal = high concern, lateral pressure. Diagonal (45°) = moderate concern, differential settling. Vertical = lower concern but monitor. Stair-step in block = moderate concern. Width: Hairline (less than 1/16") = low concern. 1/16" to 1/8" = worth monitoring. Greater than 1/8" = schedule an inspection. Greater than 1/4" = schedule an inspection promptly. Growth: Mark crack ends with pencil, date it, measure width, check in 30 days. Any extension or widening = active movement. Location: Near the base of the wall or at wall-floor junction = more concern. High on wall = less concern. At corners of openings (doors, windows) = differential settling indicator.
The most reliable self-assessment tool is a combination of direction, width, and growth rate. A 1/8" vertical crack that has been stable for 5 years is far less urgent than a 1/16" horizontal crack that appeared last month. When in doubt, our free inspection gives you a definitive professional assessment rather than ongoing uncertainty.
